Jobless claims higher than expected

Employment growth remains strong with retrenchment down but unemployment continues to rise
Total employment growth remained strong in the second quarter (71,400) declining slightly from Q1 08 (73,200), but it is still higher than a year ago (64,400). This brought employment growth in the first half of 2008 to a record 144,600, compared with 113,800 in the same period last year.

Report on Wages in Singapore, 2007 and Singapore Yearbook of Manpower Statistics, 2008
Reflecting the premium on skills and knowledge, jobs requiring professional and specialised training continued to command higher salaries in 2007. Wages were also commonly observed to rise with age, especially for occupations at the higher end. The link between age and earnings was less obvious for the lower skilled and blue-collar occupations whose wages rose slightly with age and peaked early in their thirties.

Employment Situation in First Quarter 2008
Employment continued to grow strongly as the economy picked up pace in the first quarter of 2008. Preliminary estimates show that employment grew by 68,400 in the first quarter this year. This is higher than the increase of 62,500 in the previous quarter and 49,400 in the first quarter of 2007.

Today, the F&B industry is growing at an exponential rate. Supported by a local population with a passion for good food and a thriving tourism sector, the industry expects positive growth of between 8% to 20% over the next three years.
